🧘 Patience Score
Smooth trend or choppy noise?
Patience pays most when price moves steadily in one direction rather than zigzagging. The Patience Score divides the net 20-bar price change by the total distance price travelled bar to bar, giving a directional efficiency value between -1 and +1. It is then mapped onto 0-100 and lightly smoothed.
Running live on a simulated market ·
The exact formula
step = ABS(close - close[1])
path = SUM(step, 20)
IF path == 0 THEN eff = 0 ELSE eff = (close - close[20]) / path
raw = 50 + 50 * eff
patience = EMA(raw, 5)
OUTPUT patience // 0-100, 50 = choppy / no progress
How to read it
- Above 70: price has climbed efficiently with little back-and-forth, a smooth uptrend.
- 40 to 60: lots of movement but little net progress, a choppy market.
- Below 30: price has fallen efficiently, a smooth downtrend.
- Readings drifting back toward 50 after a smooth run suggest the trend is getting noisier.
Why it might help
It highlights when a market rewards holding steady and when it is mostly noise. That can help investors resist overreacting during choppy phases.
Limitations
- The 20-bar window is short relative to long-term investing.
- Smooth trends can still reverse suddenly.
- Does not account for volume or volatility level.
